A Shop Lover’s Tribute to Yoli Del Buono
By Adria S. Zeldin
In 2009, I left my job as an attorney with the government to work freelance and spend more time doing things I love. I began volunteering at the Audubon Naturalist Shop that year. I had taken several classes in the Natural History Field Studies program and loved the ANS folks I had met and loved spending time at the Shop. When I began working at the Shop, the Assistant Shop Manager, Yoli Del Buono, and her daughter Catherine trained me on the cash register and helped familiarize me with the Shop’s inventory. Over the years, I grew very attached to Yoli and the Shop. I loved coming to work when Yoli was there. She loved to strike up conversations with customers and I enjoyed listening to her interactions with customers.
In between customers, Yoli and I spent a lot of time talking, and on slow days we shared many stories with each other about our families and our lives. Yoli always asked about my family and particularly about my sons. My son Diego and Catherine graduated from BCC High School the same year. Yoli always listened with interest as I related Diego’s most recent adventures with his studies and his career as a musician. She shared stories with me about the plans for Catherine’s wedding and I shared stories with her about my step-son Jordan’s wedding plans. We also celebrated our happiness when Catherine gave birth and later when I became a grandmother after Jordan and his wife, Jessie, had a baby earlier this year.
I was so touched when Yoli told me,on more than one occasion, that she tried to work at the Shop when I was there so we could spend time talking and catching up. I felt the same way, and always loved it when she and I could catch up during my shift at the Shop. Sorry Matt and Gavin, but I know you both understand that we two women loved to kibbitz and schmooze. A wonderful benefit of being Yoli’s friend was that I got to know her daughters, Catherine, and “little” Yoli. We worked together at the ANS table at the Strathmore Museum Shop Around many years. I will miss you dearly, Yoli, and so will many Shop customers.
